! Blocks

! Blocks are floating blocks found in Super Mario World. At first all the player can see is Dotted Line Blocks, which is their outline, but after Mario or Luigi hits one of the ! Switches at the Switch Palaces, they become filled in. Additionally, some ! Blocks contain various power-ups. Yellow blocks contain Super Mushrooms, green blocks contain Cape Feathers, and red and blue blocks contain nothing, but may provide extra paths to a short-cut or a secret room.
! Switch

The ! Switch was first seen in Super Mario World. The switches come in four colors, Yellow, Green, Blue and Red. Stomping on the switches activates them. When activated, they turn Dotted Line Blocks into ! Blocks of the corresponding color. They have the same purpose in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. In Super Mario 64, the yellow ! Switch isn't present since the yellow ! Block is available by default.
? Block

The ? Block (known as the Mystery Block in Super Mario Land and Prize Block in Super Mario World) is one of the many blocks found in the Mario universe. ? Blocks are commonly seen floating in midair, often containing Gold Coins, Super Mushrooms, or Fire Flowers. In some games (for example Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, as well as several classic platformers) there are some invisible ? Blocks. In Super Mario Bros. 3, the game shows platform physics about when the Mario Bros. are attempting to hit the ? Block but not just punching below the block. One example is when Mario or Luigi use the Tanooki Suit, the Mario Bros. can use their tails to whack the ? Block. Another example is by using the Koopa Shell, when Mario or Luigi kick the Koopa Shell to the ? Block; the ? Block will pop out containing a Coin or an item.
Blue Coins

Blue Coins first appeared in Super Mario 64, and were worth five Gold Coins each. There are also Blue Coin Blocks; when Mario attempts to Ground Pound on them, the Blue Coins appear near to Mario as the time starts.
In Super Mario Sunshine, 10 Blue Coins can be exchanged for one Shine Sprite. There were 240 Blue Coins in the game, so a total of 24 Shine Sprites could be exchanged for Blue Coins.
Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a common item found in just about every Mario game invented. Different types of mushrooms have different effects. Even the Toad people are humanoid mushrooms.
1-up Mushroom

1-Up Mushrooms are green mushrooms that give whoever eats one an Extra Life.
In the sidescrolling games, they move exactly like normal Mushrooms, but look and act different.
In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS they are the most common mushroom. Though, they are not the only way to gain a life, as collecting fifty coins also grants a life. These mushrooms were the only type of mushroom available in Super Mario Sunshine. These mushrooms are also much smaller.
Coins

Coins (sometimes known as Gold or Yellow Coins and called Mushroom Coins in the Beanbean Kingdom) are the main currency of the Mushroom Kingdom. They first appeared in Mario Bros., where they moved along the floor and were worth one hundred points if Mario or Luigi caught them. They later appeared in Super Mario Bros., where they were demoted to ten points per coin. If Mario jumped up and hit a ? Block, sometimes Coins would pop out. When one hundred Coins were collected, the player was rewarded with an extra life. Coins served the same function in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 3, and New Super Mario Bros.
In Super Mario Bros. 2, Coins could only be retrieved by using a Magic Potion to create a door near unpicked Vegetables. When this door appeared, the Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad could use it to travel to Subspace and pick out the aforementioned Vegetables, who would then be extra point-rewarding Coins. In the Mario Party series, these Coins are used to buy Stars, Items, and Orbs. They are usually obtained by winning a mini-game, when using Orbs, or at the start of the game. The way the Coins look dramatically changes with each game since Mario Party.
In Super Mario Kart, Coins were found at each course. Collecting them would make karts faster. When jostling another driver or getting hit by an item such as a Red or Green Shell, the player would lose Coins. Jostling a driver without having any Coins would result in sliding. There was even an item providing the player with two extra Coins.
Dragon Coin

A Dragon Coin (or Yoshi Coin) is a type of Coin only found in Super Mario World and subsequent remakes.
There are at least five Dragon Coins littered around every level in the game (except the Chocolate Island Secret level which only has two). Collecting five of them is the equivalent of collecting 100 Gold Coins, awarding a 1-Up for the player. On rare occasions, one may encounter six or more Dragon Coins in a single level; in these cases, every Dragon Coin after and including the fifth will award a 1-Up. In Super Mario World's Game Boy Advance remake, Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World, the amount of Dragon Coins acquired are recorded on a menu, and if the player collects them all, the Coins will transform into Peach Coins.
A Dragon Coin features an engraving of a Yoshi head.
Most of the games in the Yoshi Series (such as Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS) depict their Coins (both in-game and in official artwork) as having Yoshis engraved on them rather than having the standard Mario "1" indent. This makes them look exactly like smaller Dragon Coins, and may suggest that all Coins found on Yoshi's Island were at least once Dragon Coins.
Fire Flower

A Fire Flower is one of the many powerup items in the Mario series that first appeared in the Nintendo Entertainment System game Super Mario Bros.. This powerup can be found in a ? Block if Mario or Luigi is in his Super Mario or Super Luigi form. When obtained, the plumber can hurl out fireballs from their hands that can defeat many enemies during gameplay. This powerup later appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World with their different appearances but with the same function.
Golden Mushroom

The Golden Mushroom is an item that appears in several Mario games.
In most Mario Kart games, it gives the player an endless amount of boosts for a limited time. Additionally, in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! it is Toad and Toadette's special item.
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, it is used as a Mushroom and a syrup in one item, restoring both HP and BP to max.
In the Mario Party games, it allows the player to roll three Dice Blocks at one time on their turn (or in Mario Party 5, on his/her next turn if they landed on a space containing it), instead of just the standard one Dice Block. The Golden Mushroom has the same effect as the Triple 'Shroom Orb that was used after it. In Mario Parties 2-4, The user gets 30 coins for a triple number and a 50 coin bonus for triple 7s. They Appear in Mario Party 7 and 6 as well
Red Shells

Red Shells are red Koopa Troopa shells that first appeared in Super Mario Bros.. Although not their first specific use, they were worn by Koopa Troopas. The Koopa Troopas wearing Red Shells were a bit more intelligent than normal green-shelled Koopa Troopas. They did not fall off cliffs and simply turned around when reaching a ledge. They are second most common shell, after Green Shells.
Star Man

Many Mario games, including the Super Mario Bros. series and the Mario Kart series, use Stars (AKA Invincibility Stars, Starmen, Super Stars). After picking up a Star, the user becomes temporarily invulnerable to all damage, except those of lava, deep water, falling, etc. Any projectiles or enemies that come into contact with the user of the Star while it is activate are either destroyed, damaged, or spun out (depending on the type of enemy and what game it is). The Star also increases the speed of the user substantially. The Star is undoubtedly one of the most powerful items in the Marioverse. Most side scrolling Mario games feature Stars to grant temporary invincibility, including Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
Pow Block

The POW Block, also occasionally referred to simply as "POW", is an item that appears in Mario Bros. (the arcade version and its ports; not the Game & Watch one). When hit, it damages all enemies in the screen, but only those that were on the ground. It has the same function in Super Mario Bros. 2, but it can only be used once as the player has to throw it onto the ground to make a POW.
